Workforce for the 21st Century Project Now Open for Comment: EMS Workforce Agenda for the Future The EMS Workforce Agenda for the Future was developed with the input and of coordination of a steering committee and over 20 national EMS stakeholder organizations. The Agenda is based on four primary elements that must be addressed in order to meet and sustain an EMS Workforce that is sufficient in size, well educated, adequately prepared, and appropriately credentialed, as well as valued, esteemed, well-compensated, healthy, and safe. In May 2008, stakeholders met and identified these four elements and the contributions they will make towards the development of the EMS workforce needed for the future.

The report details critical policy issues and makes recommendations regarding the EMS workforce. It may currently be accessed at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website www.ems.gov or by clicking here.The project is currently in the policy development phase. In conjunction with NHTSA and with assistance from the project steering committee, researchers at the Center for the Health Professions are working on a policy agenda for the future EMS workforce. A third national stakeholder meeting was held May 8-9, 2008 in Washington, DC to provide researchers with the opportunity to receive direct feedback from project stakeholders on a draft agenda document. Project Background: The intent of this three-phase project of the Center for the Health Professions at the University of California, San Francisco, conducted in coordination with the University of Washington, is to assess the future of the EMS prehospital workforce in the United States. The project is funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). On September 11-12, 2006 in Arlington, VA the national stakeholders convened for a second time, kicking off phase two of the project. At the second meeting, researchers shared their assessment of the EMS workforce and stakeholders provided input and developed a list of priority policy areas and related goals. Policy implementation will take place in the third phase. This website has provided a forum for the project researchers to update EMS stakeholders and the broader EMS community on the progress of the project and to receive input from the community. Our question-and-answer blog, which was updated with new questions regularly during the research phase of this project, contains a variety of questions about the EMS workforce, and informative, insightful responses from direct EMS providers.
